1. In your own words, explain the meaning of sustainability and its importance.
2. What is your reaction to Canada's report card? Why do you think we did so poorly?
3. Review the questions at the end of each of the 3Rs captions, and record you ideas
4. As a group, suggest some ways we could make improvements to Canada's report card.

Alright so your test is coming up for THIS Tuesday:
  • An understanding of how earthquakes occur (support your answers with illustrations)
  • How has global warming increased the chances of natural disasters (think of tropical storms and tornadoes). You'll also obviously need to know how global warming occurs.
  • Match definitions: e.g., tectonic plates, pyroclastic flow...etc
Nothing on this test will come as a surprise. Please make sure you study hard!

This is a reminder to both 7A and 7B that tomorrow during geography will be your only opportunity to work on your newspaper photographs in class.

If you're not planning on getting together with your partner outside of school, then I strongly suggest that you bring your props for tomorrow to stage your photographs for the fictional earthquake.

Remember you need to include:
  • 3 photographs that portray strong emotions and show the effect of the earthquake
  • Sketches of the proposed pictures
  • And a written analysis of one of your pictures that analyzes the setting, the poses...etc. WHAT emotions are you trying to communicate to the viewer -- HOW are you achieving that?
-Mr. Charalambous

P.S. It's due THIS upcoming Tuesday (the 17th of January)

December 20, 2011

For homework tonight, answer questions 1-3 on the handout, "Volcanoes Change the Earth."

Also, on a side note, this BBC link is a great resource for researching the information on how earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes and tornadoes occur. It has a step by step break down and more "advanced" diagrams than my own board drawings!

For homework -- and this should be fun -- see what you can find on natural disasters on the news. What's reported? How is it reported? Any reoccuring themes or messages?

Answer one of these questions for Friday:

1. What were the themes explored in "The Day the Earth Stood Still?" What are some lessons learned?

or

2. Was the U.S. Secretary of Defence right in saying that this is "our" planet? Keeping the film in mind, what do you think our responsibility is to the Earth?

See you next week!

-Mr. C

November 4, 2011

As we watch "The Day the Earth Stood Still," I want you to think about the themes of sustainable growth and our stewardship over our planet. What issues are brought up? What is our responsibility to the planet?

October 18, 2011

Yes, we will be having our geography test this Friday. I hope you've mastered the art of locating longitude and latitude coordinates on a map! Tropic of Capricorn, Tropic of Cancer, Equator, Absolute and Relative locations...Look at your notes and you'll do great!

-Mr. Charalambous

P.S. Don't forget the helpful video that I've added to this tab in a previous post!

Think of "Battleship." You're essentially identifying latitude and longutide intersections. Imagine that: your homework tonight is to play Battleship!
